He’ll use local anesthesia to numb the area and light sedation to increase your comfort during the procedure, which typically takes 45 minutes to an hour. He’ll start by making a small incision, either beneath your chin near your lower jaw or inside your mouth where your lower lip meets your gums. Then he’ll insert a thin tube (called a micro-cannula) into the opening and guide it to the targeted area. As he gently manipulates this precision instrument, it delivers pulsating water to loosen excess fat from the surrounding tissue, which it simultaneously extracts along with the fluid.
Before you go home, Dr. Robinson will apply sterile bandages to absorb drainage from the incision, and fit you with a compression garment that you’ll wear for 36-48 hours to protect the surgical wound. Occasionally he uses sutures to close the cannula opening; if you require stitches, Dr. Robinson will remove them at a follow-up appointment a few days after your procedure. You may experience some mild discomfort, swelling or bruising during the healing process, which is easily controlled with mild medication. Any post-surgical symptoms should subside within a week or ten days, at which point you’ll be cleared to resume normal activities.
You’ll see increasingly noticeable facial contours as the swelling decreases, but it may take three or four months before the final results of the doctor’s artistic handiwork are fully revealed.
