When to Consider Eyelid Surgery

Your Eyes Are the Window to Your Soul

If heavy eyelids due to genetics or aging make you look more sleepy than expressive, it might be time to consider having your eyes surgically lifted.

Dr. Robinson performs eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, on patients with droopy eyelids that impair their vision and on those who wish to regain a more youthful appearance by eliminating that "just out of bed" look. This procedure corrects droopy upper lids, puffiness and under-eye bags, leaving you looking more alert and well rested — and in some cases, with remarkably improved range of vision.

Dr. Ernest B. Robinson is a Board Certified Specialist with more than 20 years of experience performing personalized cosmetic surgery procedures for patients from Aliso Viejo, Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Laguna Hills and Santa Ana and beyond.

01Consultation

Communicating Your Goals for This Procedure

Eyelid plastic surgery can involve removing excess fatty tissue, muscle, or skin from your upper and lower lids, firming the area around your eyes to create a more refreshed appearance. During a consultation, you and Dr. Robinson will discuss in detail your motivation for considering an eyelid lift, your desired outcome and realistic expectations.

After taking your complete medical history and examining your eyelids, Dr. Robinson will describe how he will perform your surgery and answer any questions you may have.

  • Assessment of excess fatty tissue, muscle, or skin on upper and lower lids
  • In-depth discussion of your motivation and desired outcome
  • Complete medical history review and eyelid examination
  • Detailed walkthrough of how the surgery will be performed
  • Honest assessment of realistic expectations
Because eyelid surgery won't lift sagging eyebrows, erase dark circles or completely eliminate crow's feet, Dr. Robinson may suggest combining your blepharoplasty with a brow lift or facelift to further enhance the outcome.
02Surgical Technique

Surgical Techniques to Achieve Your Desired Outcome

1

Anesthesia & Duration

Dr. Robinson performs eyelid lifts in an hour or two at Pacific Hills Surgery Center using local or general anesthesia.

2

Upper Eyelid Incisions

For upper eyelid surgery, he makes incisions in the lines and creases where your skin naturally folds to minimize the appearance of scars.

3

Lower Lid Refinement

For the lower lids, inconspicuous incisions are made along your lash lines and smile creases. He removes or repositions fat deposits, tightens muscle and tissue, removes excess skin, then closes with ultra-fine sutures to further reduce scarring.

4

Under-Eye Puffiness

If correcting puffiness below your eyes, he removes excess fatty material through hidden incisions inside your lower lids, closed with dissolvable sutures.

03Recovery

Recuperating After Your Eyelid Surgery

When your surgery is complete, Dr. Robinson may place small, sterile bandages over your stitches. He will advise you to apply cold compresses and keep your head elevated when lying down to enhance healing and minimize discomfort.

First 24 Hours

It's normal for your face to appear puffy and slightly bruised, with some tenderness around the eyes — easily controlled with mild pain medication.

Day 3–5

Bandages and stitches removed at a follow-up appointment. Continue cold compresses and keeping your head elevated.

Day 7–10

Most patients are able to resume their normal activities within about a week to ten days.

Week 2+

Moderate exercise may resume as soon as two weeks; avoid strenuous activity for several weeks until the eyes heal completely.

04Results

Expected Results from This Procedure

Interior incisions aren't visible after surgery, and the tiny incisions around your eyes should fade completely over time when properly cared for and protected from the sun. The majority of swelling and bruising should rapidly subside, and you'll notice you look more alert and well-rested in as few as three months. Because tissue takes time to heal, it can take several months for your eyes to fully reveal their rejuvenated appearance.

  • Firmer, more refreshed appearance around the eyes
  • Correction of droopy upper lids, puffiness and under-eye bags
  • A more alert, well-rested look
  • Improved range of vision in some cases
  • Incisions that fade completely over time
  • A rejuvenated appearance that develops over several months
